Let’s cut the bull and get real here for a second… life is crazy.  Life is hard.  Life can be exhausting sometimes.  It is so important to take the time out of your busy life, to stop what you’re doing, take a deep breath, and carve out a few minutes every once in a while to take care of yourself and relax.  We are all boss babes here with a lot on our plates.  Whether it’s your kids, your man, school, work, or even family… those things can stress you out easily.  I always say you can’t take care of others until you have taken care of yourself.  That might come of as selfish to you, but it shouldn’t.  I know its extremely difficult to take a step back and just breathe or find the time to do one thing for yourself, but trust me when I say that it is so important to take care of your physical and mental well being so you can help take care of others and complete tasks that need to get done. Because I think self care is so crucial, I really wanted to write this post for you to get an idea of what I like to do for myself when my anxiety gets the best of me, and how I take care of myself with a few activities and must have items for “me time.”

Rule #1: NO PHONES ALLOWED

The number one rule for me when I take time for myself is that I can’t get on my phone.  If I use my phone I’m not relaxing and I’m either on Instagram or I’m focusing on work.  I doubt this is just me, but if I’m on social media too much, my anxiety gets worse and then I start thinking negative things about myself as I’m looking at a bunch of perfect photos of other women, even if I know that what I’m thinking about myself isn’t true.  When it’s me time, I either have to put my phone on “do not disturb” or airplane mode so I’ll be forced to focus on relaxing.

Here are a few things I like to do during “me time”

Take a hot bath with bubbles or bath salts.  This is one of my favorite activities to do for myself because it helps me relax.  Depending on what time of day it is and how my body is feeling, I either like to use these bath salts or this bubble bath.  The bath salts help with muscle tension and the lavender in the bubble bath is super soothing and calming before bed.  Turning off the lights and burning a few candles around the room also aids in relaxation so I light a few candles on the counter and around the tub and just hang out until I’m ready to hop out and lotion up.

Do a face mask. After I get out of the bath, I enjoy doing a face mask since my pores are opened afterwards.  My favorite drugstore mask is this one.  It’s really cooling and calms my skin down.  This formula is best for acne prone and sensitive skin.  I’ve been using this mask for a few months now and I recently purchased it again because I’ve seen an improvement with my skins texture and color.  I’m not as red and splotchy when I use this mask compared to using others I’ve tried.  After the mask, if I have a few blemishes or feel some forming, I use this mask as a spot treatment.  It’s easy to wash off and helps me avoid killer breakouts.  I only purchase the mini size because I only use a dab at a time on my acne, but if you want to use it all over your face you can.

Give your lips a little love.  For my lips, I feel best when they are exfoliated and moisturized.  I love long wear matte lipsticks, but they can take a toll on my lips pretty quickly.  I like to exfoliate with this conditioning exfoliating balm and then moisturize using this lip balm.  Both of these products soothe my lips and keep them plump and moisturized.  There’s nothing like great feeling (and looking) lips to make a girl feel good about herself!

Listen to some music.  I love listening to some of my favorite music when I’ve had a hard day.  It really distracts me and puts me in a better mood to finish out the rest of the day.

Read a book.  It gets difficult for me to get some reading time into my day, but sometimes I set 15-30 minutes aside to read a chapter or two in a book I’ve been reading.

Take a walk.  In all honesty, I don’t really like to work out.  Although I try to snag at least a half an hour workout in most days, sometimes I definitely don’t want to.  When I feel down or frustrated, I enjoy going on a 20 minute walk with my pup.  It makes him happy, tires him out, and clears my head.  It also makes me feel like I got a mini workout in!

Eat a good meal.  It doesn’t matter if you are eating a healthy meal, or choosing to have a cheat meal, eat what you want.  Just take the time to sit down and enjoy it without distractions.

Take a nap.  If I’m over exhausted, it’s not good for anyone I have to interact with.  Set a timer between 20-45 minutes and take a little power nap.  You’ll wake up with more energy and in a better mood.

Have a glass of wine or cup of tea.  Depending on my mood and the time of day,  I let myself have a glass of red wine or cup of tea and watch an episode of my favorite television show before I go to sleep at night.  It’s a little self care treat for me… and let’s be for real, who can live without wine?  Not this girl.

There’s a few ideas of things to do for when you are feeling like you’re day is out of control.  These tasks help me and I’m sure they will help you too.  I’ve linked everything you need for your next session of “me time” and the products that keep me feeling good.
